Steps on How to Build a Planter With Trellis

If you want to make a planter with trellis, the first thing to do is gather your tools. Having your tools at hand will help you start and finish your trellis planter on time. The planks to get for your planter should be a type that is rot-free. It will help prevent the planter from early damage. Other materials you will need to make a planter with trellis are:

Step 1: Mark And Cut Your Wood Into Size

Start to build your trellis planter by cutting the wood you want to use into size.  Before you begin to cut the wood, measure it and use a pencil to mark the point you want to cut on the plank. You can use a square speed to draw a straight line on the spot you want to cut. After marking the plank, use your saw to cut the wood into your desired size.

Step 2: Lay Down the Base

Start building your trellis planter by laying down the planter base. The base should be a grid base or should have a lot of holes. The hole will allow for proper water drainage and will also increase air circulation. After you have finished laying down the base, you can proceed to build your planter.

Step 3: Put the Planter Together

Now that we have cut the wood to size, and lay down the base. Let’s start building the trellis planter. Start by using a power or manual drill to make pilot holes on the planks that you want to use to make the trellis planter. The pilot hole will prevent the planks from cracking when you insert a screw in it. Use the drill to make three pilot holes on two of the shorter planks. 

You can now proceed to attach the planks together with galvanized screws. Attach the plank to form a rectangle or square.

Step 4: Attach the Base

Now that you have finished putting your trellis planter together, attach the base. Attach the base of the planter to the planter box with a screw.

Step 5: Attach the Feet

After attaching the grid base to the trellis planter, you can now go ahead and attach feet for the planter. Use the remaining planks to make feet for the planter. Attach the feet to the planter with a screw. You can do this by drilling the screw into the wood through the top of the base of the planter.

Step 6: Attach the Trellis

Then proceed to attach the trellis to the planter with your drill and screws. Ensure that the trellis is tall enough for your climbing flowers. As soon as you have finished fastening the trellis to your planter box,  your planter with trellis is ready. 

You can place the trellis planter in your garden and use it to cultivate plants. If you don’t want to place it outdoors in your garden, you can place it on your balcony. Add loamy soil inside the planter box and use it to start growing your flowers.

Adding Trellis to Half Barrel Planters

Another way you can make planters with trellis is by using a half-barrel planter. Adding trellis to this kind of planter is very simple. You can make a planter with trellis by attaching the trellis to the barrel with a screw. Apart from that, you can just insert the trellis inside the barrel and fill it up with soil to hold it in place.

After you have finished building your planter with trellis, it is good to waterproof it. Waterproofing your planter will make it last longer, especially if you’re placing it outdoors.

 You can waterproof your trellis planter to prevent the wood from absorbing water. Do this by applying sealers or sealant on the planter.

 Apart from sealers, you can also paint the planter to prevent it from absorbing water. The paint will help the wood to repel water and, at the same time, make your planter look more attractive.
